Art: Copper & Verdigris Leaf Bowl Art Vessel by Artist Nan Thompson
This unbreakable Bowl/Art Vessel has a Hand–Hammered Copper exterior and outward facing Verdigris Leaf rim. It is actually paper with Faux Copper and Verdigris finishes. It is ultra lightweight but strong and sturdy. When raking leaves, I noticed that tulip tree leaves are strong and pliable. I wanted to use them in their malleable state rather than incorporate them into my paper pulp. But how? Malleable, like clay, that was it! So I made the base of the Vessel with paper and covered it in paper clay. Each Leaf was impressed into clay and cut out. Now I could bend my clay leaves and overlap them to form the rim. I painted the leaves in Verdigris. To hint at autumn they were glazed with an iridescent Copper acrylic, which settled in the fine intricate veins and gives a Coppery glisten to the leaves. The body of the Vessel was painted with a bright Copper acrylic and left bumpy to imitate hand-hammered Copper. For protection it has several coats of clear acrylic making it possible to be cleaned with a damp cloth. It is NOT waterproof; but you can add a potted plant with a saucer to collect water. But this is only one possibility. How about fruit? Maybe mail? It is signed and dated by the artist (Me).
