Art: Seashore Cabinet by Artist Monica Faith
Actually, the pictures here are the only proof I have of this particular piece's existence as it was part of a store's show inventory when an antiques and collectibles retailer shut down his operation and moved. I haven't loaned out a piece of art for showing at a show I'm not present for since then. Shame on some people! About the piece: This is a functional vessel called the Seashore Cabinet. Originally a medicine cabinet set aside to be discarded after redecorating, I took this home initially because I needed the mirror from it. After replacing the mirror with this mosaic, the donor of the original medicine cabinet wanted it back. The metal handle was replaced with a pottery handle, and large floor tile from Spain was machine-cut to fit and replaced the original glass shelves inside. The new shelves held a high-maintenance girl's unbelievable perfume and fingernail polish collection prior to its disappearance. The interior was painted antique gold using sponging and antiquing methods. The mosaic itself was created using machine cut Italian floor tiles, curved porcelain from bowls for the clouds, a part-plaster mixture with soap bubbles added to create the 3-dimensional sea "foam", and seashells from the Carolina shore added for a realistic effect. A terracotta flower pot was cut in half with a wet saw, implanted within the mosaic, and mosaiced as well (using vintage saucers from England). They are holding an authentic dried arrangement from the Carolina shore.
