The heart of Mainz - capital of Rhineland-Palatinate and diocesan town - was one huge construction area a couple of years ago. Fortunately the fences around those old sandstone buildings including the Dom (construction started 975 a.D. - no there is not a missing 1) were decorated in an eye-catching way. The buildings will probably last some more centuries, the fences are probably already gone.
Having spent several years of my life in the area, I was always fascinated by the antagonism between old "artworks" - here represented by buildings from ancient times - and modern city life. This is quite common for a most European cities (probably all if you look carefully), different to my current residence in North America.
This is the original photo without any cropping or filtering, taken with my Olympus D400Z. To be viewed on state-of-the-art computer screens around the end of the last millenium (and uploadable over the internet in a decent period of time). For more technical details check the EXIF inside the jpg.
