Materials/process: Taken with a digital Nikon Coolpix 4300, during a historical examination of the urban setting of the historic Hawaiian church Kaumakapili ("blinks the eyes"), in Honolulu.
What made you choose your subject: Tamashiro Market is an institution in urban Honolulu, its crab sign and pink paint announcing its iconic status. It is right next to another icon, the Hawaiian church Kaumakapili Church (I am standing in its parking lot). People usually go to this market to pick up the week's fish, and you can buy Hawaiian food as well: poi, lots of poke varieties, and the Sunday paper. Tamashiro's and Kaumakapili were part of my life when I lived in Honolulu; food and worship, staples of the traditional Hawaiian lifestyle, urban or rural. The red crab and pink paint is particularly startling in a setting of mostly grays and greens.
