Art: Paris Hotel, Sepia Version by Artist Joanna Daneman
Photo of Paris hotel in 1976, done while I was a student there. It was photographed on Ilford Pan-X film with a Pentax ES camera, 1.2 lens. Then it was scanned and digitized after printing on Ilford matte paper, and sepia toned digitally. The sepia version of this old hotel is more "Parisian" in some ways than the black and white version and captures some of the feeling of a late winter afternoon in Paris. I went back on May Day in 2000 to see if I could find this hotel and the places I stayed as a student. Most of the buildings were gone; the old convent-turned-hotel was absorbed into a huge hospital complex that existed there for years but got very large. Many of these old buildings seem to exist forever, but when you try to find a particular one, you see it has a different facade, or has been torn down. Yet Paris remains essentially as it is; even the addition of the I. M. Pei pyramid to the stately Louvre failed to really change the character. That's what I was hoping to achieve with this photo--the sense that time, sometimes, can stand still, or seem to do so.
