Art: Dead Birds Call by Artist Lance Michael Foster
Materials/process: Taken with a digital Nikon Coolpix 4300, during a meditiative walk through the urban landscape of Honolulu. What made you choose your subject: I had to laugh when I saw the sign under this H-1 Freeway overpass in urban Honolulu. I know what was meant, but the alternate meaning is both odd and hilarious. Ironic narrative in the landscape is a favorite subject of mine. I used to walk by this sign every weekend when I went to the Varsity Theater for a matinee. The underpass is a roosting place for pigeons, which die all the time, and so this sign gave directions on who to call when a pigeon corpse was littering the sidewalk, not a phone number for dead birds to call! At the same time, it is a sobering reminder of our own mortality, especially as it is located right near a freeway ramp, and I had been nearly hit almost everytime I crossed there. I did not wish to become a dead bird myself!
