This One's for Dan. As Dan was creating his momument to pro-life, I wonder if he gave any thought to pro-choice and a womens right to control her own body. Does he only see a woman as a baby making machine? Her rear end up in the air popping out babies . Yes Dan- birth is a fantastic and wonderful event - but only when it is the womens choice. Every child deserves to be borne wanted.
My drawing was done to remember all the women who have been forced ,or will be forced, intimated or guilted into carrying an unwanted pregnancy to term . In any of the aforementioned circumstances, birth will most likely not be a joyous event. No monument will be made to these women.
The use of the color blue in the drawing is meant to convey a deep sense of coldness and lack of compassion for a womens circumstances, and the right to make her own choices. Her hands were drawn small and useless to represent the womens lack of control over her body. The ball represents the heavy emotional weight of carrying a unwanted pregnancy. The chains represent being bound - a prisoner to religious zealots convictions. The women is shown floating in a hopeless circle with no way out, her voice and opinions silenced. The numbers on the left side of my drawing represent the months of gestation. The womens face is contorted in fear, and grief, doomed to bear a child of a rapist. l have chosen to give the state of South Dakota top billing in this piece. The state of South Dakota has passed a very radical anti-abortion law- no exceptions even for rape or incest. In essence South Dakota does have a forced labor division - Thus came the title of my drawing. " Forced Labor" How many South Dakota Pro- Life People will come forward and adopt a child borne out of rape and incest? In fact how many of those of the anti- choice mind set will adopt any child? How many pro life people will gladly vote to raise their taxes to support these children. I really do respect each persons right to have their own beliefs, whether those beliefs are pro-life or pro- choice. I do not feel they have the right to push or force their beliefs on others. The State Of South Dakota is just the tip of the iceberg in denying a women the right to choose. Many other states are gearing up to squash choice for women. The women in my drawing , also know as case # 889 is locked into wearing a monitoring and tracking device. This compliance device is not as far fetched as it sounds. She has no say, no choice. "Forced Labor was done with pastel chalks and a art pencil on acid free paper. I then took it into Paint Shop Pro and added the text .I manipulated the drawing using the sphere effect in order to make the stomach look more descended. The intent of my piece was to convey how hopeless and out of control a women feels when choice is taken away from her. No women should be forced into childbirth. I really think we need to do all we can to provide effective birth control education. If preventative birth control fails, a women must then be allowed to make her own choices regarding her pregnancy. "In the words of Margaret Sanger early 1900's champion for a womens right to birth control "Let every women decide for herself if and when she is to have children.
