This painting shows the influence of Wayne Thiebault in the color notes around object edges, something I admire in his work. The subject was taken from a small travel (folding) chess set that belonged to my grandmother. I don't usually work in pastel hues so this was a change for me, but I had fun with it. I was aiming for a slightly surreal effect with the soft creamy colors and the skewed perspective. Traditional games such as chess and playing cards are a regular source of inspiration.
I chose this piece for the Think Pink show because it was... pink. This is an invitation to women everywhere to not play games with their health and get checked regularly. I wanted to enter the show to support the fight against breast cancer, which concerns everyone.
