When my daughter, Tamara, turned three, all she talked about was having a ‘Pink’ birthday party. Everything had to be pink! We decorated the birthday table together, with a pink tablecloth, pink napkins, pink paper plates and cups. The cake frosting, the cup cakes, the jelly, the lemonade, the lollipops and even the balloons were pink! She looked as pretty as a picture in the pink party dress, trimmed with antique lace, that her Grandma had sent for the occasion. Her guests arrived, as per her request, wearing pink (yes, even the boys!). Watching her eyes grow wide in wonder and her cheeks flush pink with excitement, as she blew out her 3 (pink!) birthday candles, my heart was bursting with love and pride. Like any mother, I desperately wanted to hold and protect forever, the innocence, health and happiness of: my darling little ‘Pink Princess’. It was a moment I knew I’d want to treasure forever - so I tried to capture it in a painting. Now, 23 years on, as I look at the beautiful young woman she is today, I am humbled and filled with gratitude that we have never had to face a terrible, life-threatening disease like breast cancer. I’m aware that so many mothers and daughters, all over the globe, are not so fortunate. So, to be able to support (albeit in a small way) the outstanding work of an organisation such as the Susan G Komen Foundation, with my art, is truly a privilege, indeed.
