I have always lived rural because I prefer it. So my initial reaction to "Suburbia" is summed up by the title of this piece: each in their own little box. I imagine endless rows of houses, all the same, with endless families all the same, living their lives all the same. Realistically, I know this isn't true. Each house is unique with its own ambience. Each family and each person have different lives and different loves. One house may have a cat in the window and another an enchanting rose garden. Yet another house has a brief case sitting just inside the door, while the neighbor children play outside on roller skates or with sidewalk chalk. Blowing bubbles, ballet lessons, star-gazing, goodnight kiss, hot coffee, red wine, family dog, rainy days, friendship, home-cooking, crayons, house plants, blow dryers, hammers, gold fish, and high-heeled shoes... I decided to incorporate all of these elements (and more) of everyday suburban life into one piece, with each in its own little box.
