This piece takes its inspiration from three artists: Paul Calle, author of "The Pencil"; Mike Sibley, author of "Drawing from Line to Life", and Ryan Keberly creator of the "Snowsuit Effort" an art photography blog.
I combined pencil techniques from Calle and Sibley and drew subject and compositional inspiration from Keberly. The pencil technique and style does not follow either Calle or Sibley but takes more "what" from Calle and some "how" from Sibley. I did not use any of Kerberly's images directly, rather I found inspiration in his subject matter of close-up photos of faces of street people. I considered what gave his photos impact, namely close up distortion and sharp focus for an "in your face" feeling of immediacy.
I treated this piece as more of a painting than a drawing. Drawings typically have extreme detail or are just a gesture, this piece includes some of both of those extremes with a "painterly" use of large pencils and a wide value range. I decided to create a dramatic graphic composition using a hat brim for a diagonal, rough, varied textures for the hat and clothing, and a hint of a street scene as background.
this is my first attempt at these techniques, and is very different from any other drawing that I have done. I learned a great deal and will probably create more in this style.
