For this painting I began by putting a texture compound on the canvas and then while it was still slightly wet "carved" the pear into it. This gives the painting amazing texture and an old world feel to it. Which contrasts nicely to the brilliant color and clean design.

I have always been inspired by Cezanne. I love the weight he gave his paintings. The objects, especially the fruit, in his paintings are so solid. By combining texture and clean lines, I was trying to achieve this same weightiness and solidity in this pear.
