Wraith is defined as a ghost or spirit of a deceased person. Generally speaking, ghosts are not considered good in our society and have been feared for centuries.

I think of them as sinners caught in a sort of spiritual Purgatory, haunting houses and people until they can go to heaven. Purgatory, according to Catholics, is where you go to get your minor sins forgiven; it's not as bad as hell.
