Art: Magdelene by Artist Inshan Ali
Once a sinner always a sinner? Or can a sinner be redeemed? Are we all sinners? And if so can we find our way back to redemption?

“The apostle to the apostles” she is described as in early Christian writings. Yet she started out as being cleansed by Jesus of “seven demons”. Some believe that the name Magdalene was added to Mary to distinguish her from other women named Mary. Others believed that she was from Magdala – a town thought to be close to Galilee. However, in Aramaic “magdala” means ‘tower’ or ‘elevated’.

The current view of Mary Magdalene is as patron of women’s teaching and ministry. This was not always the case. She was often speculated as being a former prostitute, unchaste, and “the woman who was a sinner”. Others have also speculated that she may have been more than a disciple to Jesus – inferring that she may have been a lover or wife.

This piece does not explore whether any of these speculations are true but rather to serve as a vessel of introspection … into our own lives, our own sins and our own redemption. The truth resounds that we are all sinners – in some form or another. However, the purpose is not to dwell on the fact that we are sinners but to devise ways to be better persons.

This is my first spiritual piece but it was a wonderful journey. Being born to a Christian mother and going to catholic college, making this piece tapped into my spiritual entities and I rediscovered that profound connection to that which is greater than us all. I hope it brings you some sort of emotion and that it encourages you to introspect and reflect.

Its 7” x 14” and done in colored pencils.

Enjoy
