In this self-portrait I represent myself as both child and woman. My very expressive style of painting, along with intense colors and vigorous strokes, intensifies the affective component of the painting.The images in the painting can be understood at both child and adult levels of development. The male doll represents future relationships with men and my child relationship with my father. The small toy to the left, connected by an umbilical cord is my child-doll I use to prepare myself for my babies that will be born in the future. The breast represents both my maternal needs as a child as well as being maternal in adult life. The title, taken from the Mother Goose book of Nursery Rhymes, has a very powerful meaning to me. I grew up with a view of myself as not only different but as "bad". I continue to struggle with a personal sense of guilt and responsibility for others. I use my work to create a narrative of my life to not only tell my story for myself but also to communicate with my viewers on what it is like to be human.
