Created from cardboard, dice, poker chips, playing cards and electrical wire.
This necklace is created with layers of cardboard topped with small sections of playing cards. Those pieces are then attached with electrical wire (stripped of the insulation) to poker chips. I also added dice dangles.
One of the biggest challenges was to create a way to wire all the components together, so I made findings out of recycled coffee stir straws. These provided a channel to hold the electrical wire in place.
Shiner Bock is the official beer of our studio (in moderation, of course) so we always have the cardboard packaging laying around. We create jewelry from game pieces so we always have "orphan" parts available. Put it all together and you get this funky Necklace and Earrings set.
Necklace is 18" long.
The earrings are 1.5" long on surgical stainless steel ear wires.
Creating with items that some people consider trash is very challenging, interesting and best of all, fun. There is a term, Trashion, that really captures the process in one word. Take some trash, make some fashion and you have Trashion! People of all ages seem to appreciate the reuse and recycling of ordinary items into fun and functional accessories and home decor. The process of this type of art keeps me engaged at a level that I had never experienced before with other types of art.
