This is my first painting on a smashed aluminum can. I created it for the EBSQ show, "Repurposed: Art from Recycled Materials."
After flattening a soft drink can with my foot and a hammer, I lightly sanded the surface, then coated it with clear acrylic gesso. This created a nice "toothy" surface upon which to paint. I then painted the surface with black paint. After that dried, I used a pencil to sketch in my image, then applied layers of acrylic paint to complete the image in bright colors.
It was actually fun to paint on such a heavily textured surface, and this project turned out better than I'd hoped.
