This painting was based on a photograph from a friend and associate who had been vacationing in France with his family, and took the landscape shot from the view looking out toward the Eiffel Tower from the Pompidou Center in Paris. I was commissioned to create an interpretation of the photograph. I chose to soften and warm up a beautiful photo realistic, yet relatively low-key almost metallic overcast color scheme, to a more post impressionist/fauvist palette, and lend energy through an expressionistic abstract representation. All the while retaining the integrity of the setting and relation to the original photo, with its intense sea of woven architectural angularity, and blended matrix of compressed structural characteristics due to the mostly rooftop perspective, from nearby neighborhood to the horizon.
