Owned by Mr. and Mrs. Mike Sholar of North Carolina, Gracious Plenty is one fashioned to the likeness of Roman Catholic micromosaics of old. Beautifully detailed hand painted, raised Italian tile border the mosaic with a wood frame bordering the tile. Many, many materials from various sources were used for this piece. The tabletop was fashioned from collective vintage iridescent glass dinnerware found on ebay, the wall background is Mikasa dinnerware bought at an estate auction, the basket is from vintage cup saucers, the banana from hand glazed Italian tesserae, the apples and oranges from stained glass, the grapes are glass beads with plaster built up underneath to give them the effect of cascading over the basket. Two weeks in the studio on this one piece, using tweezers to insert the smaller pieces. This piece was the first where the grout was tinted according to shadowing and highlighting, and the grouting process itself took six hours. I would love to do another of this subject and this detailed, but will probably only do it again for a commission versus for my own pleasure given the time and materials involved.
