I've been working a lot with texture lately. This painting began with a thick overall layer of wall joint compound which is basically plaster. Once that was completely dry I put on layers of gesso to prime the surface and protect the texture. Once that was dry I went in with the rich, luminuos paint. The final step was several layers of glossy varnish that make the painting absolutely sparkle.
