Heinrich Heine's wrote, "Silesian Weavers." He was a socialist thinker who dreamed of a future ruled by an elite who would ensure equality amongst the people.
Today, it seems as though a power elite have risen and seeks to establish rule over the masses. Will the weaving result in a beautiful garment, or a twisted, tangled, society filled with holes?
I find the poet's work mesmerizing, though I have twisted his words to question if the elite's dream of a social order is one where all of humanity dwells in subjugation.
Here then is my interpretation of his work, which is interwoven as in fine hidden strands of thread, within the image:
In gloomy eyes there wells no tear.
Grinding their teeth, they are sitting here:
"America, your shroud's on our loom;
And in it we weave the threefold doom....We weave; we weave.
"Doomed be the Light bearer who was deaf to the good
In Winter's cold and hunger's despair.
All in vain we hoped and bided;
He only mocked us, hoaxed, derided.....We weave; we weave.
"Doomed be false king, the rich man's king,
Who rejoices in our suffering,
Who tore the last coin out of our hands,
And let us be shot by his blood-thirsty bands...We weave; we weave.
"Doomed be the homeland, false stolen name,
Where nothing thrives but disgrace and shame,
Where flowers are crushed before they unfold,
Where the worm is quickened by rot and mold...We weave; we weave.
"The loom is creaking, the shuttle flies;
Nor night nor day do we close our eyes.
Old Empire, your shroud's on our loom,
And in it we weave the threefold doom; ...We weave; we weave!"
