Goblin Valley is a hidden State Park in Utah. It is a difficult place to reach, but enchanting once you are there. It's also considered to be an energy vortex in which I can attest to a frenzied, electric feeling we both felt while visiting. Before journeying there, a friend was hesitant to tell us about this magical place where he had visited a wizard in its hillsides. But he gave us instructions anyway, and soon enough we were bound to experience a land like no other. Below is a statement from the "National and State Parks" exhibition in which this piece was showcased:

"I've been traveling now for almost ten years across this varied landscape - crisscrossing over rivers, counties and canyons. The land that unfolded before me always seemed to sooth my soul and satisfy a sense of wanderlust within me. I've treasured the secret places of ritual and mystery such as Place of Refuge in Hawaii and the energy vortex of Goblin Valley, Utah.

Through these journeys, my perception of state and national parks has changed considerably. At first, I avoided these destinations, mostly because of the assumption that they were too heavily trafficked by RVs full of screaming children and inconsiderate parents. This did not coincide with what I wanted and needed from my communion with nature. Soon enough, however, I began to view these places with newfound respect and admiration. I became so utterly thankful that not just one person, but many people had the foresight to preserve these natural wonders.

I vividly remember a hiking trip through Glacier National Park during the summer of 1996. As we traversed the rugged landscapes of the north and eventually crossed into Canada, the park ranger told us that when the park was first established, it was considered an island of civilization surrounded by the immensity of nature. Now after only 100 years, it is considered to be an island of nature surrounded by civilization. Much has changed across America and Canada within this time and I feel certain that without significant and continued preservation efforts, society and its intense need to consume, will ruthlessly continue to encroach upon these important spaces. This exhibition was intended to express my intense love of nature and appreciation for what is still wild and pure about America."
