This painting is based off of a real store-front church that are so numerous in Detroit. It was called, "Elohim Praying Hands and Hair Ministries". It was typical of many fly-by-night churches here in Detroit because it was dual purpose and didn't last long. It was a hair shop during the week and a church on weekends.
In the painting, a woman dressed in metallic Sunday clothes and hat, very typical again of Detroit, is sitting next to a boy who is also wearing a very typical metallic suit in Detroit. On one side is the church and the other you see it says, Wash and Set. Her fan has, "Perm $39.99" written on it. And there's someone with a collection plate as well. I hope that the viewer enjoys this and sees the way many churches, these corner store churches are here in Detroit.
