Art: Oyster Heart Pendant by Artist Robin Cruz McGee
Natural, organic, distinctive.  Living in the Low Country, I look to the beauty of the natural surroundings and elements of the culture for my inspiration.  Oysters have been a part of both since before the founding of Charleston.  The original name of the point that Charleston occupies was White Point, due to the glittering of oyster shells found on the shores there.  Oysters have a long association with love and passion.

Just as it takes two to create love, I take the image of two oyster shells nestled together to create the impression of one heart. This pendant is one of a series but it is one of a kind also.  The process I use, Repousse, ensures that each iteration is as unique as the individuals that come together to make all kinds of loving relationships.

From a flat sheet, I stretch and push the metal into the image in my mind and the metal responds.  Many of the details have not been worked out beforehand but they evolve as the work grows towards completion. Isn't that like love?  The color is generated by fire. Doesn't that make you think of passion?  Enough said.
