Art: SIMPLICITY of the SOUL by Artist Dottie Cooper Katz

Upon looking at the Monumental exhibit prospectus, this previous painting came to mind.  In my 'historical' lifetime, 9/11 was an event that I wished I had not witnessed, but did via television.  Yes, this was the most monumental historical day of my life.

The contrast of the simplicity of the angel and the "souls" against the business of the "world" gives one "food for thought." Well, that is what I saw in this painting when it was finished. It was created 3 months before 9/11. Leaning against the wall in my studio, I would display it from time to time...... On that fateful day in September, my heart was filled with pain for all those people, and my mind was filled with disbelief of what happened. The images of those moments in film were broadcast over and over all day long. As I was walking through the studio, all of a sudden the image caught the corner of my eye. As I turned to look at it, feelings rushed through me that I can't begin to explain. What I saw was an abstract version of what we all had been watching all day long. A premonition had been recorded on canvas. I trembled. At first I thought I was imagining what I saw, so without telling them , I asked several friends and family what they saw. Most were in agreement. ...... The tower, the flames, the serpent, the golden gate, angel wings through the opening, the formless souls floating toward heaven, the angel for comfort and guidance, the serpent dragging the tower down to destruction, a splat of paint that resembled the second plane.....Now when I look at this painting, I see hope, hope for the life beyond this one. Now, seeing the terror, the tradgedy, the evil, I also see the life beyond and hope for those left behind. I see the good versus evil......As an artist, I am amazed at what has come through in many of my abstract paintings. Sometimes messages come through that there is just no explaination for. They are just messages.
