Enormous Double-Triptych, Best suited for Public Viewing space.

6-48x48 panels, Contemporary Acrylic/Mixed Media on 100% Cotton gallery wrapped Canvas.

Unframed, Edges painted. Each panel is braced in the center.

Top triptych consists of panels 1-3. Bottom triptych consists of panels 4-6. Each 48x48 panel is independent, as well.

This work depicts the my response to the events of September 11th, and the ensuing media bombardment of words and images.

Each panel contains life-size casts or real objects attached or embedded in the painting. The arrangement of the 2- by 3-panel grid reflects the forensic process of dividing up the ground zero area for investigation.

First, I was stunned by the magnitude of the event. I wanted to create a piece that reflected that scale inside a gallery. Almost immediately when the dust cleared, first responders tackled the enormous mountain of evidence. I was struck by the reverence with which they approached the task. This respect was afforded to every personal item, article of clothing, and every part that was once a person. The careful sifting took months, yet it was never questioned, but automatic. I hope I have been able to convey that sense of responsibility in this piece. And I hope it honours those individuals who spent their days on "the pile", as they called it. I have tried to afford the viewer a chance to stand before that task and share in the feeling of reverence.

Creating these panels was very similar to the excavation process, only in reverse. Care was taken to set watches to the actual time that they stopped, and all publications were current and likely to be at the scene. Published, first-hand accounts were my guide to the content.

Standing in front of this super-sized assemblage is an intense experience.
