Inhumanity
January 2009
A global economy is being pushed on societies that can least afford it. The US is quickly becoming a caste system where only the wealthy can afford proper healthcare by purchasing profit based insurance coverage. America is the only Industrialized nation to not offer even basic medical care through a tax structure as an integral part of society.
Profit based health care leads to inhumanity.
It is a basic human right to have access to health care where it is available, yet insurance companies in the US toy with our access, deny coverage, refuse to pay for treatments that have been completed and the premiums go up and up. If you lose your job, you lose your healthcare or you must pay dearly to extend your coverage or pay out of pocket. If you lose your coverage and need to reapply you may find that you cannot get coverage for "pre-existing conditions" which means the high premiums you pay won't even cover some of your healthcare needs.
Many people can't even afford to use their health insurance because co-pays and deductibles are too expensive. They put off preventive care only to have it lead to far more costly treatments in the end. Some people die while waiting for procedures and medicines to be approved by insurance companies. Doctors are secondary to the equation and profit is the goal.
I created a backdrop of dollars on canvas paper with acrylic paint and gel medium. The digital photo is the juxtaposition of the basic need and human right to medicine, health care and doctors and the profit based corporate health care and health insurance network.
