Art: Tracks of Impermanence by Artist Shelly Bedsaul

"Tracks of Impermanence" is layered with all kinds of personal symbolism and I think I need to explain it. I've borrowed much from my Buddhist practice. Mainly, nothing stays the same, yet the fundamentals of who I am are pretty consistent. The tile border is the path we walk and gets worn & cracked with use. The rose is life itself, both beauty and pain. It begins as a bud, then full bloom, begins to lose it's petals and finally the rose hip, both the end and it's most nurturing fruit and within and throughout, there are thorns. The mirror balls represent illusion. What is seen in the mirror is only a reflection. It doesn't exist in reallity as is the struggle to attain a life of security without change. The cracks in the woman are her experiences. They are what make her interesting contrary to popular belief that a crack is a flaw, damage, disposable. And finally, her youth is her inner being. No matter the tracks, the heart still burns. She still has passion.
