The image is created from a twenty-piece stencil that is cut from sheets of masonite. Making the stencil is a very labor intensive process, and can yield an edition of 100. Although the image is repeated and many pieces can be generated from the stencil, each piece is original combination of color and accident and therefor one of a kind.
The graffiti work of artists like Keith Haring and Kenny Scharf have always been favorites of mine. Growing up in the 80's, a child of the punk era, I spent way too much time in trouble. I had far more energy and creativity than I had outlets for them. The art that those two brought to the street, became mainstream pop, and ascended to the ranks of 'fine art'. 'The Graffiti Divas' incorporates my current work in jazz and blues themes with my earlier mischief imitating these early masters of graffiti. These works are on paper instead of unsuspecting walls.
