Art: Fern Fronds by Artist Shawn Marie Hardy
Unfurling fern fronds symbolize beginnings in Maori culture. Their leaves opening up and welcoming the world are one of my favorite things to capture on film. New Zealand is the most spiritual place I have ever been, and it is there that I captured this image.

The ferns there come in all sizes - these were found while taking a nature walk in the forest near the Catlins, far south on the south island. This day happened to be overcast and stormy so I was able to achieve some awesome colors with my Canon T-70, a camera that has been around the world with me on a few occasions. With a polarizing lens, I was able to pick up a lot of periwinkle and lilac colors. There is nothing like real film vs. digital - I have never been able to pull off such lush imagery digitally.
