Octopus' Garden

Art: Octopus' Garden by Artist Doris H. David
This 10" X 14" watercolor on Arches 140 cold press paper has the feel of an underwater garden tended by the resident octopus who can be seen at the bottom of the piece. I think that in the beginning, I didn't have it in mind to do that, but it sort of evolved as I continued to paint it. The artist Joan Miró described this phenomenon in this particular quote:

"Forms take a reality for me as I work. In other words, rather than setting out to paint something, I begin painting and as I paint the picture begins to assert itself, or suggest itself under my brush.

Even a few casual wipes of my brush in cleaning it may suggest the beginning of a picture. The second stage, however, is carefully calculated. The first stage is free, unconscious; but after that the picture is controlled throughout, in keeping with that desire for disciplined work I have felt from the beginning." Joan Miró
