Who we are & why we're here

EBSQ Logo

In a nutshell:

EBSQ is an online artist community and portfolio site. Our easy-to-use tools empower artists to create a web presence for their art within minutes, allowing you to connect with other artists and art lovers world wide. Additionally, there are monthly exhibition opportunities, an engaged community forum, opportunities to learn (or teach!) new skills from art techniques to marketing via social media. We're working artists ourselves, and we created a site that we not only wanted to use, but do use on a daily basis. Whether you want to extend your online network or are just getting online for the first time, we invite you to get out of the vacuum and express yourself!

Who you'll find here:

EBSQ is made up of artists, photographers, crafters, and people who simply love art. Pretty much every continent is represented. Pretty much every media is represented, too. Our members come from all walks of life. Some are emerging artists. Some went to art school. Some even taught art school. Most did not, but you'd be hard pressed to tell who is who based upon the quality of their art. Many have gallery representation. Some even own their own galleries. (Most do not.) But what all of these diverse artists share in common is a desire to put their work out there and have a direct conversation with folks who share their passion for art.

How we got here:

EBSQ was originally conceived back in 2000 by California artist and educator, John Seed. Pronounced ee-bee-es-cue, the then-eBay tag was a variation on e-Basquiats, referencing an artist favoured by many of our earliest members. While our artistic "sensibilities" have greatly diversified since then, the name remains the same, as does John's original mission: support living artists.

The website you're visiting today was the brainchild of Pittsburgh artists Bill and Amie Gillingham. Bill does the programming stuff. Amie does the community and marketing stuff. Melissa Morton-Woodall (not from Pittsburgh, but also an artist) joined along the way and does the exhibition and educational stuff. We also have a great group of art bloggers and community forum volunteers.

What artists are saying about EBSQ:

What's so great about this place anyway? Perhaps it is that I received a commission upwards of $2k because someone spent two hours perusing through EBSQ looking for just the right art to showcase in his freshly renovated house. Something to fit his style. Just one reason EBSQ is so great. Thanks EBSQ!

I was a patron on EBSQ for 2 years before joining as an artist member a year ago, and I had no idea what I was missing! The shows are an amazing motivator, and the forums are an endless source of information, inspiration and just plain fun! I have made wonderful friends here. I cannot imagine my life without EBSQ now!

I joined EBSQ years ago while trying to forge an online presence for my paintings. It was such a reasonably priced and easy to use format that I couldn't resist. I still use it as my painting website...

What I wasn't prepared for was the wonderful artists' community that I was joining. I'm a bit isolated where I live so it's very important to be able to have a place like this to go to. The forums are the best... warm, caring individuals who share information generously and are always there for support in good times and bad....I can't do without my daily (well, several daily actually) dose of EBSQ friendships!

Joining EBSQ back in 2005 was a decision that has rewarded me through the years many times over. It has been so helpful in my efforts to forge an online presence for myself as an artist -- in fact, I haven't felt the need to develop a personal web page for my artwork, because EBSQ has always satisfied that need. EBSQ is my web page. As well designed, attractive and professional-looking as the site is, I feel truly confident whenever forwarding my EBSQ portfolio page to any acquaintance or potential business contact -- plus the site's 'user-friendly' qualities for setting up accounts and personal portfolios have always been very much appreciated as well. In addition, the community aspects of EBSQ, including the site forums and monthly themed art shows, as well as a highly responsive maintenance crew, have also been an enormously valuable through the years. As a highly satisfied EBSQ member, I would heartily recommend joining the community of EBSQ to any artist, wherever they may be in their career path.
