But just one. I received it in my email and would like to address some points the author made. It's the gentleman who complained that his show entries never win. But all I see when I click on that topic is the familiar yellow and white error screen we get when EBSQ is down. What's up?

Yes, we know. I'm not sure if Bob deleted his post, or what exactly happened. Bill is looking into it now. In the interim, I addressed Bob's questions via email.

Thanks for the heads up!

Great.
I was going to tell him that a carnation is a dianthus, that having a statement and participating in the forum helps, and a centered composition doesn't.

Centered composition or not, I really liked his entry. And he has a point, photography rarely wins - maybe we need more photography only shows in the future. I would hope that participation in the forums isn't a factor because that smacks of "popularity contest."

I know it does, and it's not a factor for me when I vote, but if you look at the results month after month, it does matter. I don't think it's only a matter of voting for your friends. When you are more familiar with a person's work, it's easier to judge, and you are drawn to it to begin with.
A centered composition doesn't mean it's bad, lots of times it works, but in this particular case I don't think it does. The flower and the light are great, but I think it was poorly framed.

He was wondering why he wasn't winning. I just listed some things that came to mind. The statement or lack thereof is a biggie of course. This thread should probably be rerouted to the Exhibits topic.

I don't know that I agree - your statement assumes that most if not all of the people voting are forum participants - again I sincerely hope that's not the case. Christine wins a lot, she almost never posts here.

Honestly, I don't really think it's fair to critique his work like this - he didn't ask for a critique, his post was about the fact that photography rarely wins. And he's right. When I vote I rarely look at the statement unless I'm torn between two pieces.

Fair enough, he didn't ask for a critique. He was just surprised that he never won. I was only speaking for myself and saying why I didn't vote for that particular piece. I vote for photography a lot, and I have seen photography win. And I never vote for pieces with no statement.

OK, good point. There are people who enter almost every show and that we never see here, but I have become familiar with their work. It is more about exposure than friendship.

My two cents....Photography does win, but just like a painting or digital work I think it has to be exceptional. A recent piece that comes to mind...Richard Holland from the Under the Sea exhibit. There were tons of pieces in that show. Richard's piece was exceptional, most of his work is.
If a photo is going to compete with paintings, digital works ect...the composition has to be strong. It really has to stand out, and as Muriel said a centered comp usually doesn't.
As far as a statement is concerned, I don't think it's always necessary to win but it does matter.
Popularity....probably, if I'm torn I do vote for the piece I'm more familiar with, which usually means I've seen their work more often. I think consistency is pretty important. I scroll before I vote and don't look at the names, but I'm betting that I could tell you who did the work very often without a name. That includes photos as well. Carolyn's piece deserved to win...it's exceptional, and like Richard Holland, her work is always good and consistent.
Wow, that's a lot of babbling....the fact is Bob asked the question.
