Sorry to keep you waiting for an answer, Tash. Abbey's First Communion was yesterday and we were pretty much out of the office all day.
To fix it, click edit for that item and change its image role to public if necessary. Then click the Galleries tab. If you don't have any personal galleries listed here in that pull-down menu, simply highlight and delete (not in a personal gallery) and type in the new gallery name. Then click save. That should do it! The new gallery will now show up for other items that you want to add to it in the future.
You probably already figured that out by now, but if you didn't, let me know if this works for you, or if we can provide any further assistance.
