I'm a newbie...a couple of questions regarding photogra... - 10/23/2009 12:42:57 AM

Hi y'all... !!!wwwWWWOOOWWWwww!!! I'm sooo overwhelmed with the talent of the artists on this site! *in a good way, of course* I love this place!

I'm still trying to find my way around, so to speak. My first question [as I know I'll have many more] is how to "protect" my photographs? 99% of my fotos are self portraits and, at least, 50% are nudes, so you can understand my concern on this.

I don't think there is any right click protection on this site...is there? * for example, flickr...*hope that's not a bad word around here!* You can right click anything here and save a copy to your pc...not so wonderful! I know that I can watermark them and lower the resolution. The problem I'm having though is that if I lower the resolution my foto becomes distorted...does that deter peeps from buying? Any other ideas on how to handle this?

My second question...totally different, is how do I upload fotos in a separate file or folder that are only visible to me? Ok...that's it fer now...THANK YOU for your time!!!

most people who answer tech questions on ebsq are on the east coast and so prolly asleep right now so you might have to wait for your answers until tomorrow - welcome and good luck with the site - Have you checked out the shows? They are my favorite thing

Hi, Selva! So sorry to keep you waiting for a reply.

No, we do not have right click protection here. It negatively impacts how people browse our site. And someone hell-bent on snagging your photos knows at least half a dozen ways around right-click blockers. Our site only displays up to 800 x 800 when viewed larger, so you can get away with uploading smaller jpegs/web-friendly jpegs rather than your higher resolution images you no doubt have available for making giclees of your work.

You can also upload work to our site that isn't visible to the public. Just select "none" as your default personal gallery for these items so they aren't public. Also, if there are ones you want to keep totally private I don't recommend placing them in one of EBSQ's public galleries, which is likely a no brainer, but you'd be surprised, lol. There's a more complicated way to create private galleries that we'll likely put in a how-to video soon.

We're looking at improved upload tools/private galleries/piracy protection for the future, so stay tuned!

Cheers,
-Amie

WOW! You guys RAWK!! ...THANK YOU so much for the warm welcomes! As you can see by the time (4pmCST), I try not to run to my emails first thing in the morning cos then I can't manage to tear myself away to get anythin' else done! *heehee*

I've read through some of the old oooold posts and got TONS and TONS of info! OMG!! Did I say TONS!? I love that no one is embarrassed to ask any kinda question...I'm wunna those! My momma always says "no hay pregunta que sea estupida, nomas la que no preguntes!" *LOL* ok..ok, I'll translate = "there is no stupid question, except the one that you don't ask!

Ms. Amie, no worries, I appreciate you already...I know YOU're the WOah-MANg to see about important stuffs! *yeah, I been readin' up* You're correct on the right click thang. I realize that when there's a will, they'll make a way. I can live with that. However, when I first began with digital images/camera I had NO idea what the heck I was doing (not that it's gotten any better either) lol. ...seriously! Many *like 50%+* of my fotos are 640x480, so I'm considering putting them in as ACEOs only...what do you think/suggest? Of course, the best way to distort them is to enlarge them...LOL!

Ok, I couldn't remember where I had seen the instructions to upload to a gallery that was of "works in progress" that wasn't public just yet. Thanks for that info! Is the portfolio for works that are, and are NOT, for sale? Sounds goofy now that I'm reading the question, but hey, better to ask than not! *grinz* I could separate them into two folders...suggestions?

Now that I'm all giddy with my new friends, I'll warn you that I'm awful about connecting names with user ids [and many times faces]. I say that, because sometimes I don't think your name fits you and I have to work hard to connect you. I'm not that "virtual" *lol* I'm a people person IN PERSON...heh heh...that's my story and I'm stickin' to it! *giggles* I'm excited to see the blogs as well. I only wish that they were all in one place. Is there a place to blog here?

Heide: love your handle *smiles* how I love your *ahem* "country"...as your great [and most intelligent] govenator would say khaLEEforniAH iz vunderfull. I loveLOVElove the scenery! My sister lived in Monterey for eight years! That area looks like a piece of Europe was dropped there accidentally! lol...you know what I mean. I'm in awe with the flowers and bugs I saw while running around in Carmel.

Amanda: ...checked you out on ETSY and love your jewelry...very kewl and would love to see more! *I have a problem with jewelry...it always finds my wallet*

Donna: it was your entry into the Think Pink Show here that inspired me to really consider entering something!

Christi: omg GREAT abstracts! Abstracts seem to give so much movement and genuine expression of emotion than anything, although that's not necessarily true for everyone, but it is for me. oooh gurrrrrrrlfrieeeend NINE chee-who-ah-who-ahhs!!! I know they ARE adorable! I have a rat terrier and a labbe (designer doggie: 1/2 black lab & 1/2 beagle).

Carolyn: wow..some reeeally KEWL digital art ya got thar!!! I haven't quite figured out PS. Maybe cos I don't have it!? LOL...I have "PhotoImpression4" (pseudo PS) and I thought IT was da bomb!!! *pffft* I'm not a techie either...and what it's taken me to adjust to digital...ugh, let's not eeeven go there! *lmao*

Please know that I gladly/happily/desperately want and accept/absorb constructive criticism! I need all the help I can git! THANK YOU, again, for all of your help and guidance!

Selva,

Just saw your question. You can include any manner of artwork in your portfolio if you choose. That includes work that isn't available, previously sold, currently in progress, and curently available. How you use your EBSQ portfolio is a personal choice and entirely up to you.

Cheers!
-Amie

Hi Selva, and welcome!
At the resolution for portfolios here, peopel can't do much damage even if they do copy your work, unlike on Flickr where you can upload huge images if you want to. Don't worry about distortion, almost everything looks good on screen, LOL. I upload my work here at the recommended size, 800x800 pixels, but on Flickr I don't upload anything bigger than 1 MB. That doesn't leave much room for unauthorized printing.

Thanks Amie, for the info. I'm so excited that I don't know what to upload first! lol...I'll hafta dig up some oldies but goodies and fotograph 'em! YIPPPEEE! *grinz*

Muriel, thank you for the welcoming and the info! I'm no puter techie so when you say 1MB, are we talking about a file that is 1000x1024, yes?  If that's the case, then I don't even go that big on Flickr. Most all of my Flickr files are 640x480. I'm very comfortable [already] with what I've seen here, so the only thing I've changed is the "quality" of the foto. I hope I'm making sense. *lol*
