OK, I don't know the truth about smileys, so this will be a group endeavor. :) For those of you who haven't noticed, I'm off from work today, which is why I'm surfing EBSQ like its a giant wave.
OK, I've been a member for 4 years now, so some might say that I should know this already. But, to be fair, we had a switch to a new forum in that time, and I'm just realizing that I never REALLY got a handle on what all of the smileys meant. Butm I think I know the basics, right?
Sure, we're all adept at throwing in a [:)] here and there and the more enthusiastic among us are no strangers to a [:D] often in quick succession: [:D][:D][:D][:D][:D][:D][:D]. And some pepper their sarcastic threads with [;)]s and [8D]s, and when speaking of harder times will use [:@]s.
But then it gets hairy, doesnt it? Be honest. You'll see a posting with a [X(] thrown in and think... is that a miner? Is he looking down at his boots? Is it a smiley wearing a surgical mask? Can I figure out what that means from the context of the posting?
What about this guy---> [:-] Is he shushing me? Is he holding his nose through a stinky? Is he trying to look at his finger? See where I'm going with this?
Let's generate some ideas about what the different smileys mean... then maybe what we can do at the end is post a list at the top of this section on what the smileys seem to mean to us. (Of course, I'll need some moderator help for that, but one step at a time...)
OK. Let's start with the NEXT thread. I'll submit the list of smileys, and you click REPLY and submit a thread with a smiley and what you think it means. I'm welcoming new folks as well to contribute ... they got smileys in other places too, and you folks might have seen some of these in places where you've already been, so don't be shy.
