We didn't write the software, so I'll have to make the educated guess that it's to improve load time for the pages and take less of a toll on the servers.

We don't have any control over that particular variable, so no help there.

Also, your current avatar looks good to me!

Such a cute pic of you and your pup! [:)]
If the physical size of the pic is small enough, I can do the save for web at a decent quality. Mine is a 1.5" square jpeg taken into Save for Web at 81 quality.

it's all grainy and yours isn't. [sm=huh.gif]

I'm not seeing any grainyness on my monitor. Maybe I just need new glasses? Yours, btw, are cute!

also looking on a mac monitor. i am guessing our resolutions are different, lol.

wish I could give you better advice on getting the quality you want for our forums, but image compression is outside of my area of expertise.

It looks just fine to me, also!

The highlights look a bit blown out, but not grainy...

Open your photo as is. It needs to be a jpeg. Go to Image>Image Size. Make it 145 pixels x145 pixels (or less, 145 is the max allowed, mine is 108x108) at 72 ppi. Click OK. Go to File>Save for Web. At bottom left, it will indicate JPEG, and a file size below it. Play with the Quality slider on the right (just under the Done button) until the file size goes below 10K. Any quality above 60 still shows as high. Preset should be JPEG High. I have Optimized checked in that box, but nothing else. My own avatar goes down to 9.6K at 81 Quality.

Hope this helped.

What's wrong with the one you have.

(I am avatar inept - can you tell?)

Are you going to change to your blue kelli photo in the image a day thread?  I love that one[:)]!

blumoo -> RE: another avatar question (2/3/2008 1:39:53 PM)

You have tried resizing to 145x145 pixels or less?
