Hard to tell without some image to give us an idea of what is happening.

When you save your images are you saving them "FOR THE WEB" ??

Not sure which program you are using but most of the programs like Photoshop do have an option to save "for the web" - that might help and is worth a try.

Every time a jpeg is opened, it distorts and loses compression and will pixelate and degrade.

There is another thread about uploading pics to the ebsq art case, and this same thing happened... The image got sharpened, or grainy, or "pixelated"... And in that thread, as well as this one, I believe the same "solution" was offered up. But... am I missing something? If one simply uploads an image to *whatever* site, the image is not being "opened"... is it? It is certainly not being altered (as in edited). Are you saying a jpeg degrades simply from being ftp'd? I am just curious, because whenever this subject comes up about pics being grainy after uploading, someone always suggests the master copy thing as a solution.

Yeah, I always thought that it was not just the opening bu the saving that degraded it.

See, that's what I don't get. Because when you move a file from your computer to an online server, you aren't opening OR saving, as far as I know. You are just transferring it... Right? Maybe I am wrong, but if uploading it degrades it, then it seems like every time someone simply accessed the file (as in just viewing it, online) then it would degrade more and more, and we all know this isn't true. Right?

I don't know... but so far, I suspect that experiencing graininess after uploading is a separate issue than the re-opening/re-saving thing.

Personally I'm leaning towards there being a problem with your scanner, Mia. :( You've said the original scan is looking pixelated and that your scanner is making weird noises so I think that may be the source of the problems.

Have you tried saving the scan to a TIF format instead of JPG? Once you have a master TIF format you can use Ifran view to "save as" JPG. Hope that will give you a better scan - if not, I would suggest that you try taking a photo of the piece instead of using the scanner.

Hope you find a solution!!
