OK, I don't know the truth about smileys, so this will be a group endeavor.  :)  For those of you who haven't noticed, I'm off from work today, which is why I'm surfing EBSQ like its a giant wave.

OK, I've been a member for 4 years now, so some might say that I should know this already.  But, to be fair, we had a switch to a new forum in that time, and I'm just realizing that I never REALLY got a handle on what all of the smileys meant.  Butm I think I know the basics, right?

Sure, we're all adept at throwing in a  here and there and the more enthusiastic among us are no strangers to a  often in quick succession: .  And some pepper their sarcastic threads with s and s, and when speaking of harder times will use s.

But then it gets hairy, doesnt it?  Be honest.  You'll see a posting with a  thrown in and think... is that a miner? Is he looking down at his boots? Is it a smiley wearing a surgical mask? Can I figure out what that means from the context of the posting?

What about this guy--->   Is he shushing me?  Is he holding his nose through a stinky? Is he trying to look at his finger?  See where I'm going with this?

Let's generate some ideas about what the different smileys mean... then maybe what we can do at the end is post a list at the top of this section on what the smileys seem to mean to us. (Of course, I'll need some moderator help for that, but one step at a time...)

OK.  Let's start with the NEXT thread.  I'll submit the list of smileys, and you click REPLY and submit a thread with a smiley and what you think it means. I'm welcoming new folks as well to contribute ... they got smileys in other places too, and you folks might have seen some of these in places where you've already been, so don't be shy.

Ready?

- several uses. what a stupid situation, what a dorky thing to do, etc.
- irritated, frustrated, piqued
- oh no ala "i just dropped my wet painting paint side down" "oh no!"
- illness. for awhile i called for a rule that if you posted on a thead that proclaimed illness, you must use the smiley with the mask so as not to catch and spread said illness. it is still sometimes followed.
- blech
- downcast, sad

To me, that one has always been reserved for Lee, it sums up his personality exactly....

Either that, or it is a content smurf!

sweet smile
this is funny (x however many... = absolutely hilarious, ROFLMAO)
temporarily anonymous... "you didn't see me say this, right?" BUT this set doesn't have a proper tongue-sticking-out smiley like these , which to me all mean pfffftttt or sticking out tongue at reader. As a side note, the smileys in the extra window will tell you what they are when you click on them or mouse over them, so those are easier to figure out.
wink
I like this one, especially the little horns, even if they are supposed to be raised eyebrows. The twisted mouth says "confused", so to me its uses range from "whatever" to "WTF were they thinking?" to annoyance, as opposed to anger. Moo's take is good too.
anger
sad
this makes me want to throw up
I've never been sure what to do with this one, so don't use it much
OMG! mostly in a concerned way, rather than a happy OMG
this makes me ill (but not nauseated) or, I am sick
pursing lips and inhaling: oooooo, oh wow (admiring or shocked)
looking at the ceiling, mmm, lalalala, "did I understand that right?" or "sorry if I'm giving you TMI"
not sure about this one either. It looks somewhat dejected but I don't know in what way
lips are sealed, but also "I am NOT going there"

I always use this one to represent something I am drooling for or think is really fabulous
This one to me has always been for something you can't do anything about or frustrated
this one is stink eye
This one I use for "holy shit" or this one for similar expression
this one to me has always been when I am asking a serious question or making a serious statement about facts
This one is really stupid or crossbreeding cousins
this one is when I am making fun of you or pulling your leg
this one is if I am taunting you
this one is for shocking news (usually funny shocking news)

Actually, I have used this for embarassment but this one is better. What is missing is an "aw shucks", "you're making me blush" embarassed-with-a-smile one.
"I love you too!" "You're the best!"
I like the cussing one too
and the evil grin
what is this, jealousy? it says Mr. Yuk.. not sure.

I like that. Let's do it.
