I'm baaaaack....! Yup, with the pesky Linux operating system. Trying to upload a new image to my portfolio this afternoon -- and it still isn't working for me. Last time (several weeks ago) I had success with 3 of 4 new images by keeping the browser open and waiting several hours. But it's been awhile now, and still so far no upload....

Thanks,

--Patience

I'm sure Amie will see this soon, but in the meantime what browser are you using? I'd be inclined to think it's not so much Linux but the browser. I'm a sometimes Linux user so I'm naturally curious.

Sorry Patience, I just saw your previous posts on the issue - the Adobe Flash problem. I'm on a version of Linux now using Firefox and experiencing this issue. I would think unless EBSQ decides to change away from Flash it's always going to be an issue.

Adobe Flash and Linux are not friends. There have been a lot of work arounds for watching videos that use Flash but I'm not sure about this problem. I may do some searching.

Patience have you tried using Google Chrome? It is available for Linux. I would ask hubby to install it and see if you have the same problem.

I found some people on the Ubuntu forums who both recommended Chrome or trying an addon for Firefox called Flash-AID. You can install the addon here:

Oh gosh, lovely to wake up to all these replies and suggestions! For the record -- I did try to upload using both Firefox and Chrome (which I do already have installed), and neither were successful. I will try the add-on now you provided a link for now -- thanks SO much for suggesting it, I will let you know how it goes....!

Thanks again,

Patience

My fingers are crossed for you!!

I'm going to do a little more poking about the Ubuntu forums too. Sometimes it can take a little digging before you find the right thread. But just so you know this appears to be a known issue. Many websites have upgraded recently to flash uploaders and it's wreaking havoc with Linux users. Usually there is a work around though, so fingers crossed!

I have another possible solution if what I suggested doesn't work. In fact, I don't know why I didn't think about it before! LOL

There is a program on Linux called Wine - it emulates Windows. I've read some people have had success with Flash uploaders using Firefox in Wine. Wine is easy to install on Linux and you may already have it on your system. Basically you'd be using Firefox but inside a Windows emulation. Windows and Adobe Flash don't have the bugs of Linux and Adobe Flash.

Once you have Wine installed you'd probably have to install Firefox for Wine. Here's a link for Wine on the web:

http://www.winehq.org/

You may also want to check that you have the latest version of Flash for Linux.

Also, Patience what version of Ubuntu are you using?

I'm pretty sure our upload tools aren't flash-based but javascript based, using something called dojo. You're not getting any script errors, are you, Patience?

That's interesting. I wonder why it gives an error notice for flash... Hmm

According to the source code you are using dojo but also something called FancyUpload which requires Flash to function. It's great for multiple uploads-this is an old article but still relevant:

http://www.webappers.com/2007/07/08/fancyupload-beautiful-flash-and-ajax-upload-widget/

This is why Linux is having a problem--it's the underlying Flash built into this widget.

Good news! Happy to say I'm back in business ;-). We did a systems upgrade today (took ALL day--always a rigmarole) to the latest Ubuntu version (I was only one behind, but we went ahead with it). When that still didn't work, we (I'm saying 'we' here, but of course it was really mostly the spouse) went with Amanda's suggestion regarding the Firefox/Wine thingamabob. And...it worked! Hooray -- I'm thrilled! So thank you so very much for the extremely helpful info and suggestions Amanda -- girl, you really know your stuff...! ;-)

With much appreciation to you both, Amanda and Amie -- sincerely,

Patience

Yay!! I'm so glad it worked! That's one of the things I love about Linux--there's always a way. It just takes some creative thinking!
