Counter question - 6/8/2011 5:46:37 PM

Hi - just wanted to add a counter to the new art I added in port. Went to edit the image and then selected thumbs and filled it all out ok, but it never took. I noticed that everything came up ok while I was on the add counter page, the image was there, I named it, etc. but there was no place to click to actually add it. So it looked like the only way to do it was to hit the return key because there was nothing else there. I double checked and the counter isn't added. I named it Ellie's Room and that never comes up. Any help?

It's like there was no "okay" button, no way to make it take.

I have a few questions:

Are you trying to add a counter to an item that's in your portfolio? Or are you trying to create a counter for an image you're trying to post elsewhere?

Are you hooked up with Google Analytics yet?

I'm trying to post a counter to an item in my portfolio just for here at EBSQ so I can see it. Not an image I'm trying to post elsewhere. Not hooked up to Google Analytics yet. Once I figure out how to do a counter for myself here. I'll wait on figuring out the Analytics until after I get the one here.

Go to create links/counters
Since this is for your portfolio, you don't want to link it to anything or be clickable. So, select "No, Don't link" and give it a name in the top row.
Next, select the code for the invisible 1 pixel counter. (as in copy it)
Go to the item you want to count. Click edit
Go to the statement page. Click the HTML icon at the top. This now shows your statement in code view.
Paste your code at the bottom of your previously entered text.
Reclick the HTML icon to turn off code view.
Click above the editing box (I suggest the area where it explains about how to edit as HTML) to close the editor.
Now, check your counters. If you don't see the name appearing here yet, go to your portfolio and view that item as the public would to get that counter started.

That said, if you install Google Analytics, you don't need to do any of the above. GA lets you see all of the traffic to your portfolio and profile pages without having to add and manage a counter for each. That's why I asked if it was for here or elsewhere.

Whoa! I couldn't get that to work to save my life. I guess if I want to see my counters, I'll have to try Analytics. Or just do without which is ok too.

(I couldn't get beyond the "coe for the invisible 1 counter")

Explain to me what's happening during the process. You're copying and then pasting the code you've generated into which item?

I think I will just try to figure out Analytics, Aime. Thanks for trying, but this one is kind of confusing to my non-tech brain.

Here's what I did anyway... I got all the way through it (a miracle for me), and could not close the darn thing so it would take. You'd said to "Click above the editing box, I suggest the area where it explains about how to edit as HTML to close the counter." After clicking all over in that area, I finally had to click the x to cancel the whole thing just to get out of it. If you click above the editing box, you are hitting the "galleries" and "Statement" buttons. I tried to click in the small areas in between and around all those buttons, above the html symbol, all over and couldn't get the darn thing to close. (*whew* sweating, that was hard)

Ok--what I told you to click wouldn't close the ITEM but the text editor. When you did all of that clicking ABOVE the text area but BELOW the area that has links for Details, Statement, etc, did it make the text editing bit go away and give you a nice white text box?

(if we can't get you to understand this, you're probably not going to understand Analytics)

Hey, I'm getting closer. The counter HTML is there... unfortunately the public can see it too, the HTML is right there under the piece of art. Take a look at it, it's the first piece in my art case, the kid's book I just did. You'll see the HTML underneath it. That is probably because I couldn't close the counter editing page. Are you online right now?

I think I know exactly what the problem is. I get all the way through the whole process and there's no way to close that last window without clicking on the arrow in the upper right hand corner that says Cancel. I can't figure out how to shut it down. I'm hovering over that HTML tool, clicking all around the too, the top, in between, and the page won't shut without hitting cancel in the upper right. I think everything else is right. Frustration city.

Yes, the PAGE won't shut unless you click the X, but right now, we're just working on closing the text editor to save your work. Since your code was added, it sounds like you definitely saved correctly. BUT based on what you told me, you either never exited HTML view before saving OR you weren't in HTML mode when you added your code.

AMAZINGLY I got the counter up and running! I know exactly where the problem was... when I went to the blue page, clicked, then it went to the HTML page. Well all I did was type on that page. I missed the step where there is an actual little icon for HTML on the right of the tools, the <> icon, and never clicked that. I think I was typing just on my statement page, not on the HTML page. You don't know what a miracle it was for my fibro brain to finally figure it out. YAY! :) :) :)

(it was painful though, think I'll have a glass of wine)

Huzzah!! My Fibro brain salutes your Fibro brain! I'd personally love a glass of wine, but a storm front moved through today that has put me in migraine mode for most of the day.

'Tanks for your uber patience, esp while dealing with a migraine. Those are tough to deal with.

I'll have to pay the fibro fine tomorrow, just for sitting up this late and trying to figure something complex out. But it was worth it, I feel like I accomplished something with your help, yay, mastered those counters, ya!

I worked through this too, but when I clicked on "View Counters", all I get is an hourglass. When I click the other links, they work but that link just hangs without going to the view counters page.

Did you ever get your View Counters to work? Possibly it's just the internet being slow today.

I don't know if they work or not. I haven't been able to get to that page. I don't know why. I've tried Chrome and Internet Explorer. Nothing works....but I can get onto the other pages.
