I scrapped about 5 persimmons paintings to get to this one...
• the composition is wrong (too simple, too boring, just not me)
• the color isn't right (too much variation, too little variation, too boring)
• the brush marks aren't right (too loose, too sloppy, just not me)
Today I painted this piece and I was satisfied.
Sometimes you have to make "bad" paintings to know what NOT to do and to discover NEW approaches that work. If you keep painting only what you know works, you don't find new ideas. The more experienced you become, the more routine it can become and the less happy surprises you find. Don't be afraid to scrap paintings, those paintings are your road to new expressions.
Or maybe the Goddess of Painting just tired of hearing me bang on her door and opened it just to shut me up.
