I am an Indonesian native living in New York City since 2004. I recently graduated from Hunter College with a Bachelor of Arts degree with a major in Painting. I have been exploring the use of colors to describe certain emotions that cannot be explained or expressed verbally. We often associate ourselves with colors that deliberately express our perceived emotions without the need for further explanation.
Based on my past residency in the Vermont Studio Center in the Summer of 2009, my background in culinary arts, and each Summer spent in Provincetown, MA, I realize that my feelings and perception about my own emotions have changed. These changes have been influenced by the different colors I have observed through nature and my surroundings along with my observations of the inhabitants in both places. Additionally, my perceptions have been affected by the cityscapes of NYC and other U.S. cities I have visited, specifically the contrast of different colors observed in the reflections of the buildings, the lights, the parks, and the fashions.
It
occurs to me that, in addition to the specific colors that nature has to offer,
human beings in a major city have selected certain colors as part of their
daily activities to represent themselves as individuals. Culture also plays
apart and certainly my own Indonesian background affects my own response to
color. It is in this spirit that I want to show my own colors through painting
that not only represent myself as an artist but also all of those who have
inspired me.
