Art: Ammonite Collage by Artist Ulrike 'Ricky' Martin
I love painting Ammonites - in various bright colors and in different mediums
This one started out as many different little encaustic (pigmented molten wax) paintings - on specialty encaustic paper -
which were cut into shapes - pleasingly arranged -
and collaged onto a 30 x 30 Ampersand Gesso Board.
The wax surface was polished to a high sheen, and then glazed for protection.
As per Wikipedia:
Ammonites are a group of extinct marine animals.
The closest living relative of the Ammonite, is not the modern Nautilus which they somewhat outwardly resemble, but rather the subclass Coleoidea (octopus, squid, and cuttlefish).
The last surviving lines disappeared along with the dinosaurs 65 million years ago.
