2009 seems to be my year of the cat. This piece is a rip of Elizabeth Paige VanSickle’s “Cat Fancy”. I am a great admirer of art nouveau and Beth’s angel cat’s decorative design and swirls is reminiscent of the movement. I enjoyed searching through Beth’s portfolio. She is a very talented artist and I find her work especially inspiring.
My stuffy painting was first drawn in 4 pieces (head, body, wings, and lower arms with heart) onto muslin fabric. The pieces were outlined with black paint and then fully painted. A lot of the design was drawn with dimensional fabric paint straight out of the tiny squeeze bottles. Once all the pieces dried, I cut them out, double sewed them to black felt and stuffed them. The head and wings are sewn directly to the body. The lower arm piece with the heart is attached with pink buttons, tied on.
I really enjoyed creating this piece for Beth and wish her the best in health and happiness. I really love the Geisha she did for me!
