Art: Backward Glance by Artist Shelly Bedsaul
She sees all in gray. There is no trust. All is viewed in disdain, yet she still will steal a glance in hopes for a glimpse of color. She's a woman I knew from my bartending days. So many were disillusioned. Beautiful, yet none attracted to her really wanted to know her. She developed this "backward glance" that would make a man shrivel into a mouse. Eventually, one had the courage to break through her protective shell, engage her in conversation. They later married. All but the highlights are done in graphite pencil. I used a paper stump to obtain the subtler shades. Highlights were done with white Prismacolor colored pencil. The substrate is a gray flannel mat board. I colored the hair solid without shading to represent the hardness of her outer shell and world.
