Breakfast Tea (BP)

Art: Breakfast Tea (BP) by Artist Shelly Bedsaul
This image was taken from one of my earlier ACEOs. I like the bright cheeriness of it and thought it needed to be made larger. When creating ACEOs, I felt their graphic style would be perfect, rendered as a block print. They are the "thumbnails" for future editions. The technique is almost the same, all hand colored in Prismacolor pencils, but rather than using ink for my definition, I've used this handprinting process. Block or relief printing is an ancient form of reproduction. A plate, traditionally wood or linoleum, is carved, removing all material that is not to receive ink. I use a material called Safety Cut, a rubber material much easier to cut. Once the plate is carved, the ink is rolled onto the surface, paper placed on the plate, hand burnished and "hand pulled". When the ink has dried it is hand colored. Each print is considered an original, since the printing process is part of the medium and each step is done by the artist. The print is on 16 x 19 archival rag cover stock, using Daniel Smith water soluble relief printing ink and hand colored in Prismacolor colored pencils. It is sprayed with workable fixative to seal the color. It's printed in a limited edition of 50 plus 5 artists proofs. The proofs are reserved for those that need custom color choices. This print is hand numbered (2/50), title in center, signed & dated in the margin just below the print. A COA will accompany each print.
