Early morning is a special time in the water garden. By 4:00 a.m. the birds begin to sing, and all else is still and quite except for the trickle of water flowing over rocks from the fountain. When the sun begins to rise the water lilies in their anticipation of a beautiful day begin to slowly open their blossoms from their night's slumber. This painting depicts three water lilies in various stages of their morning blooming ritual. The background is dark, as the sun's rays are not yet strong enough to drive away the night's shadows and reflect the blue sky of mid-morning in the water. The first rays of morning light are just beginning to touch the lily pads. The brilliant red color of the lily petals cannot be hidden even in the shadows of this early morning light.
The main pallet colors are:
naphthol crimson
sap green
cadmium yellow
ultramarine blue
payne's gray
