Bugling Bull Elk

Art: Bugling Bull Elk by Artist Lynn Bickerton Chan
The Rocky Mountain Elk is descended from the European Red Deer and was given the name "Wapiti" by the Shawnee Indians. Only the bull elk has antlers, which grow new every spring and summer ready for the autumn mating season and fall off the following winter. During mating season the big bulls are ready to fight for their harem of females and the distinctive sound of their bugling challenge can be heard throughout Yellowstone National Park.
