Art: Fantasy Foxglove by Artist Kim Loberg
To me, the flower foxglove has always resembled small fox-like faces hanging down from a sturdy green stalk. In researching the foxglove plant, I discovered that the folklore associated with the plant in Europe involved the woodlands folk-fairies and elves. Folklore has it that the fairies and elves gave foxes the foxglove blossoms to wear as gloves and slippers so they could raid hen houses and sneak up on other prey more silently. With that folklore in mind, I created a surreal, fantasy-type foxglove painting using acrylic paints on canvas board. The bright blue sky and billowy, marshmallow clouds accent the soft , deep lavender and pink foxglove blossoms. The sly fox-faced blossoms await any happless insects that venture too close to the plant.
